January 1999 - Following up on her debut #1 hit single "Baby One More Time", 16 year old Britney Spears releases her debut album which goes to #1 US, #2 UK.January 1999 - California band Sugar Ray release their third album 14:59 and score a #3 US, #10 UK hit single with "Every Morning". January 1999 - UK singer and former Take That member Robbie Williams tops the UK album charts with his second album, I've Been Expecting You. January 1999 - Brooklyn, NY hip hop artist Foxy Brown releases her second album Chyna Doll which debuts at US #1 led by the single "Hot Spot".January 1999 - UK DJ Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, tops the UK charts with the single "Praise You" and the album You've Come A Long Way Baby. January 1999 - American Singer/Actress Brandy tops the US charts (#13 UK) with the single "Have You Ever?" penned by Diane Warren.February 1999 - Detroit rapper Eminem co-produces with Dr. Dre and releases his major label debut The Slim Shady LP on Interscope, which charts at #2 US.February 1999 - New York City band Blondie hit #1 in the UK (#82 US) with the single "Maria" twenty years after their first #1 single "Heart of Glass".February 1999 - Atlanta, GA singer Monica tops the US charts with her single "Angel of Mine" a cover of UK girl group Eternal's song.February 1999 - Fullerton, CA alternative rock band Lit release their major label debut album A Place In The Sun charting at #31 US led by the single "My Own Worst Enemy".February 1999 - After a five year hiatus, American girl group TLC return to the top of the US charts (#7 UK) with the album Fanmail, led by two US #1 singles "No Scrubs" (#3 UK) and "Unpretty" (#6 UK).March 1999 - UK band Blur move away from the Britpop sound on their sixth album, 13, which goes to #1 in the UK, #80 US.March 1999 - Irish girl group B*witched have their fourth consecutive #1 single in the UK with "Blame It On The Weather" from their debut album.March 1999 - Welsh alternative band Stereophonics top the UK charts with their second album, Performance and Cocktails, led by three UK Top Five singles including "The Bartender and the Thief".March 1999 - Cher goes to #1 in the US & UK with the eurodance influenced single "Believe". She also becomes the oldest female artist to have a #1 hit at age 52.April 1999 - Rock band Staind, from Springfield, MA release their debut album Dysfunction and have a modern rock hit with the single "Mudshovel". April 1999 - Signed by Simon Cowell, the debut single from Irish boy band Westlife hits #1 in the UK, #20 US. This would be the first of 14 #1 UK singles for the band.  April 1999 - Tal Bachman, son of Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive member Randy Bachman, has a #14 US, #30 UK hit with the single "She's So High" from his debut album. April 1999 - Los Angeles hard rock band Buckcherry climb to #71 US with the release of their debut album along with the single "Lit Up".May 1999 - American boy band The Backstreet Boys release the album Millennium which goes to #1 US, #2 UK led by the #1 single (US & UK) "I Want It That Way". May 1999 - Snoop Dogg's fourth album No Limit Top Dogg is held to #2 US by Ricky Martin, but scores a top ten US single with "B*tch Please".May 1999 - Bronx, NY actress turned singer Jennifer Lopez hits #1 US, #4 UK with the single "If You Had My Love" from her debut album On The 6.May 1999 - Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin switches to English on his fifth album and scores big with a # 1 US album (#2 UK) and #1 single (US & UK) "Livin' La Vida Loca".May 1999 - San Diego, CA pop punk band Blink-182 hit it big with their third album Enema of the State which goes to #9 US, #15 UK led by Top Ten single "All The Small Things". June 1999 - UK singer Dido releases her debut album No Angels in the US, but the UK release is delayed until 2001. The album charts at #4 US, #1 UK led by singles "Here With Me" and "Thank You".June 1999 - Darien, CT native Moby takes dance music to the masses with his breakthrough fifth album Play which makes a slow climb to #1 UK, #38 US led by the single "Natural Blues".June 1999 - Napster, an online file sharing service is launched, allowing users to easily share mp3 music files.June 1999 - UK band Jamiroquai release their fourth album Synkronized which tops the UK charts, but fails to chart in the US.June 1999 - The 17th album from Santana, Supernatural, uses guest vocalists and tops the UK and US charts, as well as scoring two #1 singles "Smooth" and "Maria Maria". June 1999 - Icelandic band Sigur Rós break through internationally with their second album Ágætis byrjun featuring a more ambient and dream pop sound. June 1999 - The Red Hot Chilli Peppers release their seventh album Californication which goes Top Five in the US and UK and generates the Top Five single "Scar Tissue". June 1999 - Slipknot, a costume wearing metal band from Des Moines, IA release their debut album and chart at #37 UK, #51 US.June 1999 - The self-titled debut album from Detroit alternative rock band The White Stripes is released reaching #142 UK, but failing to chart in the US.July 1999 - Washington DC alternative band Vertical Horizon hit #40 US, #42 UK with the single "Everything You Want" from their third album.July 1999 - Sarah McLachlan's live version of "I Will Remember You" reaches #14 US. The single is from her live album Mirrorball recorded on the Lilith Fair tour.July 1999 - California based R&B/Soul singer Macy Gray releases her successful debut album On How Life Is which goes to #4 US, #3 UK led by top five single "I Try".July 1999 - Jacksonville, FL rock band Limp Bizkit top the US charts with their second album Significant Other. The singles "Rearranged" and "Nookie" score high on US Modern Rock charts.July 1999 - The Woodstock 99 Festival in Rome, NY is covered live by MTV. Headliners include Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Fires, violence and sexual assualt marr the event.August 1999 - Pittsburgh, PA actress/singer and former mouseketeer Christina Aguilera releases her debut album which goes to #1 US, #14 UK and spawns three #1 singles including "Genie In A Bottle".August 1999 - NY Rapper Puff Daddy (Sean Combs) goes to #2 US, #9 UK with his debut solo album Forever.August 1999 - German musician Lou Bega goes to #1 UK, #3 US with his remake of Perez Prado's "Mambo #5 (A Little Bit Of…)".August 1999 - The fourth album from R&B singer Mary J. Blige moves away from hip hop to a more classic soul sound. The album goes to #2 US and #9 UK. August 1999 - Filter, a Cleveland, OH industrial rock band, returns with new members and a second album which hits #30 US led by the #12 US single "Take a Picture".September 1999 - The third album by industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile, tops the US album charts (#10 UK).September 1999 - Miami based latin music star Enrique Iglesias has his first US #1 pop hit with "Bailamos" from the movie soundtrack "Wild Wild West".September 1999 - Human Clay is the second album released by Tallahassee, FL rock band Creed. The album tops the US charts (#29 UK) and generates a US #1 single "With Arms Wide Open".September 1999 - Italian Eurodance group Eiffel 65 go to #1 UK, #6 US with the single "Blue (Da Ba Dee)".October 1999 - 60's singer Tom Jones tops the UK charts with his album of cover songs entitled Reload led by the #3 single "Sexbomb".October 1999 - The first Coachella Festival is held in Indio, CA with headliners Tool, Beck, Morrissey, The Chemical Brothers and Rage Against The Machine.November 1999 - Rap metal band Rage Against The Machine release their third studio album The Battle of Los Angeles and go to #1 US, #23 UK. November 1999 - Country/Pop artist Faith Hill releases her fourth album Breathe and tops the US album charts and generates a #1 US single with the title track.November 1999 - The debut album by Abilene, TX pop singer Jessica Simpson is released and leads to a #3 US single "I Wanna Love You Forever". December 1999 - Issues is the fourth album by American nu metal band Korn. The album goes to #1 US, #37 UK.
