1999 in Rock & Roll History:

The internet impacts the music industry as peer-to-peer file sharing service Napster is launched allowing users to share MP3 music files online.

Teen pop, boy bands and girl groups such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, B*witched have a major impact on the pop charts.

Country music continues to cross over to the pop charts with Shania Twain, The Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill scoring major pop hits.

Music fesivals Woodstock '99 and the first Coachella Festival are held, with the former marred by violence and the latter losing money.
