January 1994 - After touring with the Lollapalooza Festival, Seattle band Alice in Chains record the EP "Jar of Flies" in one week. The mostly acoustic EP debuts at #1 in the US (#4 UK) and is the first EP to ever top the US album charts.January 1994 - "Too High to Die" is the 8th album from Arizona band The Meat Puppets and features the popular single "Backwater" #47 US.January 1994 - American singer songwriter Tori Amos' second album, Under The Pink, debuts at #1 UK and goes to #12 US, led by the single "Cornflake Girl" #4 UK, #107 US.February 1994 - California punk rock group Green Day's third album, Dookie (#2 US, #12 UK) propels them to mainstream success and includes the #26 US, #7 UK single "Basket Case". February 1994 - Mariah Carey's cover of the Badfinger / Harry Nilsson song "Without You" goes to #1 UK, #3 US.February 1994 - Pavement release the album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain which goes Top 20 in the UK featuring the single "Cut Your Hair".February 1994 - Suffolk UK extreme metal band, Cradle of Filth, release their debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. February 1994 - San Diego, CA punk pop band Blink-182 releases their debut album Chesire Cat.February 1994 - Sacramento CA alternative band Cake release their debut album. Motorcade of Generosity' along with the single "Rock and Roll Lifestyle".March 1994 - Nine Inch Nails second album, The Downward Spiral, debuts at #2 US, #9 UK. The video for the single "Closer" gets extensive MTV play.March 1994 - The third album by Beck, Mellow Gold, is his major label debut. The single "Loser" #10 US drives the album to #13 US, #41 UK.March 1994 - Soundgarden's
fourth album, Superunknown, brings them mainstream success at #1 US, #4 UK. Singles include "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun".March 1994 - Pink Floyd go to #1 in both the US and UK with their 14th and final album - The Division Bell. Though successful in sales the album is panned by critics.April 1994 - Kurt Cobain, founder of Nirvana, is found dead in his home of a self-inflicted gun shot on April 5th.April 1994 - Huntington Beach, CA band The Offspring release their third album Smash on Epitath Records and go to #4 US, #21 UK.April 1994 - Los Angeles R&B vocal group All 4 One release their self titled debut and go to #1 US, #2 UK with the single "I Swear".April 1994 - "Live Through This" is the second album from Hole (US #52, UK #13) and is released just four days after the death of singer Courtney Love's husband Kurt Cobain.April 1994 - Australian band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds release their eighth album Let Love In along with the single Loverman.April 1994 - East Coast hip hop artist Nas releases his debut album Illmatic which charts
at #12 US.April 1994 - The fourth album by York, PA band Live goes to #1 US, #37 UK led by single "Lightning Crashes".April 1994 - The single "Bump n' Grind", by Chicago R&B artist R Kelly, goes to #1 US, #8 UK. The song is #1 for 12 weeks on the US R&B Charts, the longest running #1 single ever, at that time. April 1994 - Unsigned artist Lisa Loeb goes to #1 US, #6 UK, when her song "Stay (I Miss You)" is included in the movie "Reality Bites" on the suggestion of actor Ethan Hawke.April 1994 - The third album, Parklife, from UK band Blur enters the UK charts at #1. With four hit singles, the album comes to define the nineties Brit Pop movement. April 1994 - Atlanta GA hip-hop duo Outkast release their debut album Southernplayalistic-adillacmusik which goes to #20 US.May 1994 - Los Angeles, CA alternative band Weezer release their debut album which goes to #16 US, #23 UK on the strength of the singles "Buddy Holly Song" and "Undone - The Sweater Song". May 1994 - Scottish pop band Wet Wet Wet top the UK charts for 15 weeks with their cover of The Troggs 1960's hit "Love Is All Around".  May 1994 - Ill Communication is the fourth album from the Beastie Boys and their second #1 US (#10 UK)  album driven by the hit single "Sabotage".May 1994 - UK band Erasure's sixth album, I Say I Say I Say, is their fifth consecutive UK #1, #18 US.  June 1994 - Detroit, MI singer Aaliyah releases her debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number #18 US, #23 UK featuring two US Top Ten singles "At Your Best" and "Back & Forth". June 1994 - West coast rapper Warren G goes to #2 US with his debut album Regulate - G Funk Era. The single Regulate also goes to #2 US.June 1994 - Joliet, IL native

July 1994 - NYC new jack swing artist Keith Sweat goes to #8 US with his fourth album Get Up On It.July 1994 - Cracked Rear View Mirror is the debut album from Columbia, SC band Hootie & the Blowfish. The album goes to #1 US, #12 UK driven by three US Top Ten singles incl. #6 "I Only Wanna Be With You".July 1994 - Los Angeles band NOFX release their fifth album Punk in Drublic. The album would eventually go platinum. July 1994 - The soundtrack to the popular animated movie The Lion King featuring songs by Elton John and Tim Rice goes to #1 US.August 1994 - California native Jeff Buckley releases his only album Grace. Though praised by critics, the album performs poorly, peaking at #145 US.August 1994 - Burn My Eyes is the debut album from Oakland, CA heavy metal band Machine Head. The album charts at #25 UK, but fails to crack the top 200 in the US.  August 1994 - Woodstock '94 is held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original music festival. Crowds, rain and mud plague the event, but bands Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan, Metallica and many others play on.August 1994 - Pittsburgh, PA band Rusted Root release their major label debut, When I Woke, which includes a minor hit single "Ecstasy".August 1994 - Manchester UK band Oasis go to #1UK, #58 US with their debut album Definitely Maybe. September 1994 - Danish singer Whigfield scores a UK  #1 hit with the single "Saturday Night" from her self titled debut album.September 1994 - R.E.M.'s ninth album, Monster, is a stylistic shift to loud, distorted guitars. October 1994 - UK band Suede release their second album Dog Man Star which goes to #3 UK, but fails to chart in the US.October 1994 - Irish band, The Cranberries, release their second album No Need to Argue #2 UK, #6 US and have success with the single Zombie #14 UK, #22 US. October 1994 - Bakersfield, CA nu metal band Korn release their self-titled debut album which charts at #72 US.November 1994 - '70's band, The Eagles, get back together to tour and release a live album, Hell Freezes Over, which goes to #1 in the US, #18 UK. A live DVD is also released.November 1994 - Nirvana's live album MTV Unplugged in New York is the first release following Kurt Cobain's death and charts at #1 in both the US and UK. November 1994 - TLC's second album, CrazySexyCool, goes to #3 US, #4 UK and generates two US number one singles "Waterfalls" and "Creep". November 1994 - My Life is the second album from Mary J. Blige and is also her second Top Ten album #2 UK, #7 US. December 1994 - Vitalogy is the third album release from Seattle, WA band Pearl Jam. The album goes to #1 US, #4 UK.December 1994 - UK band, The Stone Roses, return after a five year absence with the album Second Coming #4 UK. December 1994 - Sixteen Stone is the debut album from UK band Bush. The grunge influenced sound drives the album to #4 US, #42 UK.
